When Barbara Dätwyler was interviewed at the end of last week with Tele top reported on the condition in hospitals in eastern Switzerland, it was an alarm signal from the president of the Swiss Professional Association of Nursing Women and Nursing Specialists (SBK) in the St. Gallen-Thurgau-Appenzell section. There was talk of exhausted and overworked staff. And: In certain departments, up to half of the workforce has meanwhile run away.
The reason for the misery lies in the increasing corona infections and the associated hospital deliveries. The staff is exasperated because there is a clear conviction that most hospitalizations would be avoidable if more people were to be vaccinated.
“Incredibly frustrating”
In the US, this frustration among medical staff has now reached a new level of escalation. In the state of Florida, dozens of doctors left their hospital at the same time in protest. The staff must continuously work to the limit, simply because too few people would be vaccinated against the corona virus, according to the message.
As reported in the US media, around 75 doctors gathered in front of the hospital in the city of Palm Beach Gardens on Monday. In some cases, the specialist staff even interrupted meetings or other work. Jaime Snarski, one of the protest participants, sums up the situation as “incredibly frustrating”. “There are vaccinations and we know that they are safe and effective,” the doctor continues. “But there are people who simply stand against doctors and all of science.”
Only 51 percent fully vaccinated
In Florida, the pandemic situation has gotten increasingly out of control again in recent weeks. In many hospitals the capacity limits of the intensive care units have practically been reached. About 86 percent of the state’s normal hospital beds are full. Even with the deaths – last week 1486 deceased in connection with Corona were counted – record values have meanwhile been reached again.
With the increasing number of infections, the vaccination rate in the state is still low. A little over 60 percent of the population has received at least one vaccination so far. 51 percent are fully vaccinated. (cat)
