The US government plans to provide the American population with booster vaccinations against the corona virus from September. A plan has been developed to give citizens a third dose around eight months after completing their first two vaccinations.
The preparations are administered by Moderna and Pfizer / Biontech. This was announced by high-ranking health officials – including immunologist Anthony Fauci (80) – in a joint statement on Wednesday.
The vaccination protection decreases
The background to this is the spread of the particularly contagious Delta variant as well as data evaluations, according to which the protection provided by the vaccines decreases over time. The third vaccinations could therefore start at the end of September.
The entire plan is still subject to further reviews by the FDA. However, the health authorities are prepared to offer booster vaccinations from September 20.
What about Johnson & Johnson?
Presumably, such “booster shots” are also necessary for those Americans who have been vaccinated with the preparation from Johnson & Johnson. However, the vaccinations started later, so fewer data are available and the analyzes are not yet complete.
The US health authorities recently announced that people with weakened immune systems should get a third vaccination because the vaccines are less effective on them. (SDA / gif)
