Should pregnant women get vaccinated? Although they are considered a risk group, vaccination has been advised against them so far. Because there is too little data on the safety of the unborn.
Now that should change. The US American health authority CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has issued a clear vaccination recommendation for pregnant women. The agency is referring to a study that found that women who are vaccinated in the third trimester are not at risk to their babies.
“That is why we recommend that pregnant women should receive the Covid-19 vaccination,” said CDC boss Rochelle Walensky according to “CNN”. And added: “It remains a very personal decision and we recommend those affected to speak to their doctors and trusted third parties to find out what is best for the baby.”
BAG has adjusted recommendations
A few days ago the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) adjusted its vaccination recommendation. The new rule is: women with chronic diseases and those who are exposed to an increased risk of infection can get vaccinated. The recommendations are particularly aimed at health workers.
The vaccinations must be done in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, it says in a letter from the Swiss Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics (SGGG). A specialist in gynecology and obstetrics must first discuss the advantages and disadvantages with the pregnant woman and give her consent by means of a signature.
Whether there should also be a general vaccination recommendation for pregnant women is currently being discussed. (vof)
