- The Swiss Air Force has handed over the first of 22 Tiger fighter jets to the US armed forces.
- The US Navy uses the acquired Tigers for training purposes.
The takeover took place at the Emmen military airfield in the canton of Lucerne. The US Navy uses the acquired Tigers as target display aircraft for training purposes. In 2020, the Federal Armasuisse Office sold the decommissioned F-5 Tigers to the US armed forces, as it announced on Monday.
Emmen was transported aboard a United States Marine Corps Lockheed KC-130J. The majority of the F-5 Tigers purchased in the 1970s and 1980s have already been sold. A few years ago, the US Navy bought 44 F-5 Tigers from Switzerland, which were originally used by the Air Force for space security.
Today the Swiss Army still has 25 F-5 Tigers, 18 of which are in service. According to Armasuisse, they relieve the load on the F/A-18 Hornet fleet and are used for target display, training, as tow aircraft and for test flights.
Around half of the F-5 Tigers are used by the Patrouille Suisse aerobatic team for flight demonstrations. However, the Defense Department DDPS has already announced that it will stop operating the F-5 by the end of 2027. It is still unclear what the flight demonstrations will look like in the future.
