Frances Tiafoe (USA/ATP 26) beats Andrei Rublev (RUS/ATP 11) in three sets and is in the semifinals of the US Open.

The audience in New York rewarded their local hero Frances Tiafoe with standing ovations at the end of the second movement. The 24-year-old had just won the tie-break 7-0. Whether stop ball, return winner or ace: Tiafoe managed everything in the short decision. Andrei Rublev was clearly at a disadvantage.

The first round had already gone to the American in the tie-break. There he had to concede three points to Rublev, who had just missed a set point. Among other things, he misjudged his first set ball when he was praised so much that he wanted to let the ball go, but it still smacked the line. However, Tiafoe didn’t let that unsettle him and got the set with an ace.

1. Break brings the decision

It wasn’t until the 3rd round that a player made a service breakthrough for the first time. When the score was 3:3, Tiafoe managed the break to 4:3 – it should be the decision. Rublew also had two break chances in the next game, but as so often in the game, Tiafoe was able to rely on his serve.

16 years after Roddick

18 aces beat world no. 26 overall, along with a strong rate of over 75 percent points won at net. In addition, the American seemed more alert and focused than Rublev, who got more and more annoyed as the game went on.

The Russian was redeemed after 2 hours and 39 minutes – Tiafoe ended the game with an ace to make it 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 and became the first American to advance to a US Open semi-final since Andy Roddick 16 years ago.

Rublev fails again

Rublev had already lost to the same opponent in Flushing Meadows last year. At that time it was a game of the 3rd round and the duel went over 5 sets. This year, Tiafoe only needed 3 sets – and is in a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time. There he meets the winner of the game between Jannik Sinner (ITA/ATP 13) and Carlos Alcaraz (ESP/ATP 4) (from 3:00 a.m. live on SRF).

Rublev, on the other hand, cannot defeat his quarterfinal curse. For the sixth time he failed in a Grand Slam quarterfinals in the round of 8.
