Both finalists of the previous year failed at the US Open in the round of 16. A day after Iga Swiatek got it too Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian, who had been struggling with illness in the first week of the tournament, looked tired against China’s Qinwen Zheng. After losing the first set, she was quickly 2:5 behind in the second set, but fought back against the defeat and came back to 4:5. Zheng, however, kept calm and served herself in the first Grand Slam quarterfinals of her career.
Zheng’s opponent there will Aryna Sabalenka be. The Belarusian made short work of Daria Kasatkina and won in 75 minutes. In four games, Sabalenka has only lost 15 games and has not lost a set. After Swiatek’s out, she will lead the world rankings for the first time starting next Monday, regardless of her further performance. “It means a lot to me. I worked very hard to achieve this goal. I can’t really believe it yet,” said the 25-year-old in an interview at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 28-year-old from Illinois is thus maintaining her chances of making it to the final of the US Open for the second time after 2017.
Keys gets it in the quarterfinals Marketa Vondrousova to do, who probably had more trouble than expected against the up-and-coming local hero Peyton Stearns because of an injury in the hitting arm. The Wimbledon winner finally prevailed in three sets after 2:10 hours and many ups and downs. After a classic false start and a 4-1 deficit, Vondrousova narrowly lost the first set in the tie-break. In the second round, the Czech allowed 21-year-old Stearns to close the gap to 4:3 after a comfortable 3:0 lead. Only the last sentence was finally a clear matter.
