  • The US Secretary of Homeland Security is to be removed from office.
  • The House of Representatives approves the impeachment. Now it’s up to the Senate to decide Mayorkas’ office.
  • The background is a dispute over stricter migration laws.

In the House of Representatives, 214 members voted for and 213 members against the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas.

But it’s not over for Alejandro Mayorkas: Next, the Senate – the small chamber of parliament – has to decide on the impeachment. The Democrats have a majority there. It is therefore considered unlikely that impeachment proceedings will actually take place.

The background is a dispute over stricter migration laws: Mayorkas was accused of refusing to enforce immigration laws and violating public trust. Just last week, the Republican proposal failed to gain a majority in the House of Representatives.
