(Reuters) – Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles against a U.S. oil tanker on Thursday evening, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said, adding that the projectiles were damaged at sea.

The incident caused no injuries or damage and occurred around 9:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT), Centcom said in a message published on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

A Houthi spokesperson earlier said in a statement that the group launched attacks on a US ship in the Gulf of Aden and that the boat was “directly hit”.

The Houthis, who control most of Yemen and are allied with Iran, have been carrying out attacks on commercial ships transiting the Red Sea since November, operations they say are carried out in solidarity with the Palestinians.
