Marine Marine Nicole Gee is protecting an Afghan baby in her arms at Kabul Airport, a photo shared by the US Department of Defense shows. According to the US media, the 23-year-old sergeant posted the same photo on the Instagram platform and wrote: “I love my job.”
A few days later, the woman from the state of California is dead: She was on duty at Kabul Airport when a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the gate on Thursday. Dozens of civilians and 13 US soldiers who took part in the evacuation operation in Kabul were killed. Gee was one of them.
The very last Instagram post shows Gee at night, with his rifle at the ready, in front of an evacuation machine. “Escorting the evacuees on the ‘bird’”, she writes. The young woman dies shortly afterwards.
Coffins on the way to the USA
The US Department of Defense released the full names of the soldiers killed on Saturday. Gee was therefore assigned to a unit of marine infantry (“Marines”) from the state of North Carolina. The coffins with the killed soldiers should arrive at the Dover Air Force Base in the state of Delaware at the weekend, according to the Pentagon. (SDA)
