- The Supreme Court rejects restrictions on access to the abortion pill “mifepristone”.
- At least as long as the litigation continues.
- In Texas, anti-abortion activists have sued the drug’s approval.
On Friday evening local time, the decision of the Supreme Court: “Mifepristone” must not be restricted during the ongoing legal dispute in Texas. The approval of the drug was extended for a limited period of time a week ago. Now the Supreme Court has suspended restrictions entirely. The last word has not yet been spoken because of a lawsuit in Texas.
The decision of the US Supreme Court is preceded by legal back and forth. In Texas, a federal judge suspended the drug’s approval after a lawsuit by anti-abortion women. This measure has now been reversed by the Supreme Court.
The abortion opponents had filed the lawsuit to make access to medical abortion more difficult. At least as long as the legal dispute in Texas continues, “mifepristone” will continue to be approved in this state.
Abortion a hot topic in the US
The dispute over the drug “mifepristone” flared up because last year the US Supreme Court overturned the current right to abortion in the USA. As a result, the US states themselves can regulate by law whether abortion is permitted.
In many conservative states, abortions are now almost banned or restricted as far as possible. For this reason, many pregnant women have prescribed the drug via telemedicine and had it sent to them by post. This is a thorn in the side of those opposed to abortion. With the lawsuit against the approval of “mifepristone”, this practice is now to be put a stop to.
