US transportation chief says he will monitor airline performance over July 4 weekend

Airlines have canceled more than 2,700 flights over the Memorial Day holiday, boding a tough summer for travelers amid record demand and a shortage of airline workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Buttigieg, speaking at an airline industry meeting, urged airlines to ensure that schedules were realistic and that they had enough customer service staff to deal with the inevitable problems. “You have to be prepared to support the tickets you sell,” he said.

Mr Buttigieg said the airlines had told him they were working to resolve the issues.

“We will use all the authorities at our disposal to ensure that the customer has a good experience. Our hope is that before resorting to such measures, the problem can be resolved upstream”, added Mr. Buttigieg in his comments before the court. ‘Aero Club of Washington.

Complaints about airlines were on the rise even before Memorial Day weekend. The Minister for Transport said in mid-June that it had received 5,079 complaints about airline service in April, up more than 320% from the 1,205 complaints received in April 2019.
