Perhaps because of Corona and for political reasons, US President Joe Biden will not hold his first State of the Union Address until March. Usually the end of January or the beginning of February is chosen.

  • The State of the Union Address takes place once a year.

  • This year, Joe Biden will appear before both chambers on March 1st.

  • In it he will talk about the main features of his policies and challenges for the country.

US President Joe Biden will deliver his first State of the Union address in Congress on March 1. The chairman of the House of Representatives, the Democrat Nancy Pelosi, invited the President on Friday (local time) for the so-called State of the Union Address in front of both chambers of parliament. A little later, the White House confirmed the President’s acceptance of the invitation.

“Thank you for your courageous vision and patriotic leadership that has led America out of a crisis and into an era of great progress,” wrote Pelosi in the invitation. The USA would not only recover from the corona pandemic, but would “better rebuild the country,” said Biden’s party friend. “Build Back Better” is the name of the president’s planned trillion-dollar social and climate protection package, which has so far got stuck in the Senate.

Low approval ratings

March 1st is late for a State of the Union address, usually in late January or early February. The later date may be related to the corona pandemic – or with the hope of the Democrats that Congress can by then pass reform plans of the president such as Build Back Better.

Biden had already given a speech to the MPs and senators last April, three months after taking office. In the first year of a president’s office, however, such a speech is not traditionally referred to as the State of the Union Address. In the State of the Union Address, the President sets out the main lines of his policies and addresses challenges facing the country.

Biden is currently confronted with low approval ratings. In addition, the mid-term elections take place in November, in which the president’s party almost always loses seats in Congress.
