USA: Births up for the first time since 2014

May 24 (Reuters) – The number of births in the United States rose 1% in 2021, its first increase since 2014, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This report states that 3,659,289 children were born last year, the increase being linked to an increase in the birth rate of women aged 25 to 49.

The greatest increase is seen among women aged 35 to 39, while the birth rate among teenage girls aged 15 to 19 has bottomed out.

Thus, 146,756 children were born to mothers aged 15 to 19, a decrease of 7% compared to 2020.

For 35-39 year olds, there are 54.2 births per 1,000 women in 2021, compared to 51.8 per 1,000 women a year earlier.

In 2020, the number of births in the United States had fallen to its lowest in forty years.

To arrive at these figures, the CDC analyzed the registers of births recorded on February 10, 2022 for the twelve months of the year 2021. (Reportage Amruta Khandekar; French version Valentine Baldassari)
