USA: Growth in the manufacturing sector in decline – ISM

WASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) – Growth in U.S. manufacturing activity slowed unexpectedly in April, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) monthly survey released on Monday showed.

The ISM manufacturing index came in lower at 55.4, matching the September 2020 low, from 57.1 the previous month as economists polled by Reuters had expected an improvement to 57.6.

The new orders sub-index reached 53.5, its lowest level since May 2020, after 53.8 and that of employment fell to 50.9 after 56.3 in March.

The price paid component came out at 84.6 after 87.10.

Another survey on manufacturing activity in the United States, that of S&P Global, shows on the contrary an acceleration of growth, the PMI index returning to 59.2 after 58.8 in March and 59.7 in estimate “flash”. (Written by Laetitia Volga, edited by Matthieu Protard)
