WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) – U.S. jobless claims rose in the week to Jan. 8 to 230,000 from 207,000 the previous week, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Economists expected an average of 200,000 jobless claims.

Listings for the week of January 1 have not been revised from the first estimate.

The moving average over four weeks stands at 210,750 against 204,500 the previous week.

The number of people regularly receiving benefits rose to 1.559 million during the week of January 1 (the last week for which these figures are available) against 1.753 million the previous week.

In financial markets, Wall Street index futures accelerated their gains after the release of this indicator. (Report Lucia Mutikani; French version Claude Chendjou)
