(Reuters) – At least 35 people, including several children, have been killed in flooding caused by torrential rains in eastern Kentucky, the governor of the eastern state said on Monday.

Authorities were trying to bring relief to residents and provide food and shelter to the thousands of displaced people.

“It’s really tough,” Andy Beshear said. “Flash flooding and strong winds could still happen.”

Officials have warned further downpours could hamper rescue operations. According to the National Weather Service, several storms and precipitation are expected through Tuesday.

Andy Beshear explained this weekend that the authorities “would find bodies for several more weeks”, while help reaches more distant areas.

Kentucky was hit by another deadly natural disaster seven months ago last December when tornadoes killed nearly 80 people in the western part of the state.
