(CercleFinance.com) – A record number of Americans are expected to flock to stores or shop online over the Thanksgiving long weekend this year, according to the Retail Federation of America.
According to NRF estimates, some 166.3 million people plan to shop over the long weekend, which runs from the Thanksgiving holiday to Cyber Monday.
This is around 5% more than the influx of 158.3 million which had characterized this same weekend in 2021, specifies the professional association in a recent study.
While the traditional ‘Black Friday’, which traditionally sees Americans flock to department stores the day after Thanksgiving, has lost its importance over the years, it is still the most popular day for Americans to shop.
Thus 69% of consumers planning to make purchases this weekend plan to make them today, followed by 38% of purchase intentions for the day of ‘Cyber Monday’.
Of those 114.9 million people planning to shop today, 67% intend to go directly to stores, up from 64% last year.
In terms of categories, the most popular gifts remain clothing, followed by gift cards, toys, then entertainment (books, music, video games, etc.) and confectionery.
Among children, the brands most in demand remain Lego, Hot Wheels and PlayStation among boys and Barbie, LOL and Lego among girls.
