USA: Sharp increase in job creations in January

(Updated with market reaction)

PARIS, February 2 (Reuters) – The American economy created more jobs than expected in January, shows the monthly report from the Labor Department published on Friday.

This report lists 353,000 non-agricultural jobs created last month in the United States, compared to 333,000 (revised from 216,000) in December, while economists polled by Reuters forecast an average of only 180,000.

The unemployment rate remained stable at 3.7% in January as in the previous month, against a forecast of 3.8%.

The average hourly wage, for its part, jumped by 0.6% in January, after +0.4% in December, against a consensus of +0.3%. On an annual basis, its progression reached 4.5% after +4.1% the previous month and a consensus of the same magnitude.

On Wall Street, futures on the S&P-500 index reduced their gains on Friday after the publication of this report, which dampens hopes of a rapid reduction in key rates from the American Federal Reserve (Fed).

The “futures” now suggest an opening of Wall Street in decline
