USA: Slight downward revision of growth

(CercleFinance.com) – The GDP of the United States increased by 2.6% at an annualized rate in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to the third estimate of the Department of Commerce (DoC), compared to a second estimate which was 2. 7%, and while Jefferies was waiting for confirmation.

‘The revision is mainly due to downward revisions to exports and consumer spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, have been revised downwards’, explains the DoC.

This downward revision therefore implies a slowdown in economic growth that is all the more significant compared to the annual rate of 3.2% in the previous quarter. In total for the year 2022, growth in the United States is still estimated at 2.1%.

Meanwhile, the PCE price index rose 3.7% in the fourth quarter, the same rate as previous estimates. Excluding food and energy prices, it rose by 4.4%, an upward revision of 0.1 percentage point.
