USA: Stagnation of retail sales in April over one month


PARIS, May 15 (Reuters) – Retail sales in the United States showed stagnation in April from one month to the next, show data published on Wednesday by the Commerce Department.

Economists polled by Reuters on average forecast an increase of 0.4% in April after an increase of 0.6% in March (revised figure of +0.7%).

Excluding automobiles, fuels, construction materials and food services, sales contracted 0.3%, compared to an increase of 1.0% (revised from 1.1%) in March. The consensus was for an increase of 0.1%.

This category is closest to the component of household consumption expenditure used in the calculation of gross domestic product (GDP). (Writing by Claude Chendjou, edited by Kate Entringer)
