SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The man suspected of assaulting the husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to attempted murder and assault charges at a hearing at the end of which he was imprisoned without the possibility of release on bail.
David Wayne DePape, 42, is charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, burglary, elder abuse, forcible confinement and threats against an official.
The suspect has pleaded not guilty to the charges for which prosecutors say he could face sentences ranging from 13 years to life in prison.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Diane Northway ordered David DePape to remain in detention without the possibility of bail.
The suspect’s court-appointed attorney told reporters that his client was also in federal custody.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was violently attacked last Friday at his home by a man who demanded to see the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Nancy Pelosi’s husband had to be taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery to treat a fractured skull and injuries to his right arm and hands.
