usage is increasing, so is fraud

The use of contactless mobile payment has increased by more than 130% in the first half of 2022. A growing success that creates new opportunities for fraud. The Observatory for the security of means of payment of the Banque de France warns users, because the transactions and the amounts involved are rising sharply.

The ramp-up continues. The number of mobile contactless payments has progress of 131.5% in the first half of 2022, according to the observatory for the security of means of payment (OSMP) of the Banque de France published on Tuesday. The amounts paid by mobile phone increase in proportion: +135.7%, according to the same source.

According to a study carried out by Panorabanques, quoted by Les Echos, 19% of French people used mobile payment in 2022. Mainly young people under 35.

Apple Pay, Google Pay, Paylib: yes, mobile payment is taking off!

This growing success interests fraudsters, who also see new opportunities. The slight increase in fraud on so-called proximity payments, at physical points of sale, is entirely attributable to the increase in fraud on mobile payment, notes the Observatory. It represents only 4.6% of all card payments, but 51% of fraudulent amounts.

The digital wallet must be secure

The main fragility of mobile payment is at the time of enrolling the bank card in the electronic wallet Apple Pay, Google Pay or Paylib, to name the main ones. Some fraudsters manage to usurp the cards of their victims all the more easily as some banks do not properly secure this step.

To remedy this, the European Banking Authority recently recalled that the enrollment of a card in a mobile wallet was conditional on prior and systematic strong authentication of the bearer under the responsibility of the issuer, underlines the OSMP.

On Tuesday, the OSMP also included a point concerning mobile payment in its recommendations on the reimbursement of victims of fraud. It asks the banks to repay automatically and without delay the stolen amounts from the moment the enrollment of the card did not give rise to strong authentication.
