Unusual incident in Schmerikon SG: Two private cars of police officers had to be deleted on Wednesday morning, shortly before 1.30 a.m., in the outdoor parking lot on St.Gallerstrasse in front of the police base. They were on fire. There was a lot of smoke.
The patrols present on site immediately began to put out the fire. Due to leaking gasoline, another car that was parked next to the burning car caught fire during the extinguishing work. The fire brigade was then able to quickly extinguish the fire in both cars.
The cause is now being determined. “At this point in time, it is unclear how the fire came about. We investigate in all directions, ”says Florian Schneider from the St.Gallen canton police to Blick.
Cars belong to forensic technicians
A technical defect cannot be ruled out. But: “There is no spontaneous inflammation in cars. The car was parked in the parking lot the day before. Therefore, the focus is on arson, ”said the Kapo spokesman.
The owners of the cars are two forensic technicians. So far, there is no connection between their work and the incident.
The fire caused property damage of a currently unknown amount. The parking lot is located directly under the motorway bridge. Due to the heavy smoke development, the speed on the motorway had to be reduced. The Uznaberg tunnel was temporarily closed. (jmh)
