Use your iPhone as a webcam: no need to wait for official media, all you need is a 3D printer

During the recent WWDC, Apple highlighted a new function for macOS Ventura: Continuity Camera (Continuity on the camera in the French version). Behind this name hides the possibility of using the photo/video sensor of your iPhone as a webcam. To make it more practical, Apple has announced the marketing of dedicated supports, in particular for its MacBooks, presenting for example an accessory signed Belkin.

But users of iOS 16 and macOS Ventura betas with access to a 3D printer were quick to test this feature with adequate support. This is the case of Jonathan Wight, a software engineer at Apple who has made supports for the iMac Pro and MacBook Pro. Fairly simple accessories since they consist of a custom-made piece of plastic with small hooks to hold on the edge of the screens of these computers, designed to accommodate a magnetic MagSafe charging roller which keeps the iPhone in place ( and even charge it while it serves as a webcam).

This engineer provides the 3D files on the GitHub platform, giving anyone the ability to print the models he designed. Please note that the models in question are not suitable for the iMac M1, whose edge design is more “square”, nor for the Studio Display screen.

We do not yet know exactly when the official supports will be available in stores, nor their price. Making this “homemade” version costs more or less around forty euros since it is necessary to acquire a magnetic wireless charger for the iPhone. Some might be tempted by the adventure once the public betas of iOS 16 and macOS Ventura are available (for the moment, only developer betas have been released).
