Uterus tipped back: what is retroflexio uteri?

It is no longer surprising that our female body is a miracle. Nevertheless, everything below the belt was taboo for a long time. And I dare to say that even today there are many women out there who have no idea what exactly happens during the period, how the pill works or what the difference between the vulva and vagina is. Therefore we clarify. Today in the program: The uterus tipped back.

Our uterus in hard facts:

  • it is about seven to ten centimeters long and four to five centimeters wide
  • however, it becomes significantly larger during pregnancy
  • it is pear-shaped
  • it is very flexible and stretchy
  • In 90 percent of women, it is tilted forward and thus offers ideal conditions for pregnancy
  • However, ten percent of women have a uterus that tilts backwards – retroflexio uteri.

Retroflexio Uteri: What is it exactly?

A retroflexio uteri does not lean forward towards the abdominal wall as usual, but backwards towards the sacrum. However, as long as this uterus, which is tilted backwards, is movable, i.e. mobile, the inclination is simply seen as a variant of the normal position, which only very rarely causes complaints.

Getting pregnant with retroflexio uteri – is that possible?

If the uterus is flexible despite the inclination, it usually just opens up during pregnancy. In the past, it was thought that the position would make it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg – but the assumption has now been refuted. A tilted uterus has no effect on fertility, cycle, conception and pregnancy.

A tipped uterus is more likely to cause problems if it has grown together with the peritoneum due to inflammation or endometriosis. A so-called fixed retroflected uterus is immobile and cannot straighten up even during pregnancy, which can also have an impact on conception.

Symptoms that indicate a fixed uterus:

  • Lower back pain
  • chronic pelvic pain
  • Menstrual pain
  • constipation
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

Most women who have a womb that tilts back don't know that. And as long as there are no problems, they don't have to.
