“Uterus transplantation should be considered a clinical reality in the United States,” the researchers wrote.
All the women had so-called absolute uterine factor infertility, which means that they were born without a uterus or had to have it removed.

In 74% of recipients, the uterus was still functioning one year after transplantation. In this group, 83% had live-born children, the researchers report.
The babies were all delivered by caesarean section, on average 14 months after the transplant. More than half are born after 36 weeks of gestation.
After delivery of the recipient, the transplanted uterus is removed to avoid the need to use lifelong immunosuppressive drugs.
The American operations, carried out at Baylor University Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, are part of the hundreds of uterus transplants carried out so far in the world.
