In 2024, German holidaymakers will increasingly be heading further afield. Many of the trendy travel destinations are in Asia, a Skyscanner analysis shows.

The Thai province of Krabi is the trendiest holiday destination in 2024. The travel search engine Skyscanner found this out in an analysis of travel trends in 2024. “Based on millions of hotel and flight data as well as a comprehensive study on travel behavior,” it emerged for 2024 that long-haul destinations in particular will be in demand among German travelers in the coming year, as the company explains on its website.

Asia is trending

According to the data, seven of the ten trend destinations for 2024 are in Asia. The search queries for these Destinations increased the most compared to the previous year. Krabi and the city of Chiang Mai in Thailand are at the forefront, but Taipei (Taiwan) also attracts holidaymakers. The Japanese cities of Osaka and Tokyo as well as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam are also in the top ten. Outside Asia, travelers from Germany are drawn to Skopje in North Macedonia, Bordeaux in France and Trapani in Sicily – places that are suitable as an alternative to other, more overcrowded tourist magnets.

According to the Travel Trends report, weather (63 percent of respondents), food (57 percent) and culture (49 percent) are the most important factors in choosing a travel destination in the coming year. Once there, visiting the beach (58 percent), tasting local food (49 percent) and historical tours (30 percent) are at the top of the travelers’ agenda.

Stars and series provide travel inspiration

The study shows that the topic of culture is also important for holiday travelers next year. For example, interest in traveling abroad for a concert is greater than ever before. More than a third of German travelers (35 percent) would book a short-haul flight to see their favorite band live. According to the analysis, the cheapest concert tickets for 2024 with the most performances for under 25 euros are offered by the destinations Leeds (Great Britain), Bordeaux (France) and Rome (Italy).

Another 28 percent of German travelers use film and television as a source of inspiration. Especially when popular series start, there is often an increase in search queries for the respective filming locations. “Emily in Paris” is currently at the top of the list. After the third season started at the end of December 2022, Skyscanner recorded a 45 percent increase in searches from Germany to Paris in January 2023 compared to the previous month.

Many other travelers, on the other hand, are tempted by culinary delights: 27 percent of German travelers have already booked a travel destination solely because of a specific restaurant. Another 41 percent say in the new survey that they would like to do this someday. The city of Osaka tops the list of perfect destinations for budget-conscious foodies in 2024. There, travelers will find some of the cheapest high-end restaurants in the world.

Luxury vacation – but inexpensive

According to the survey, the types of travelers who will set the tone in 2024 are “analog adventurers” who want to put digital devices aside, holiday vacationers who celebrate birthdays or anniversaries far away, and, among others, the group of price-conscious luxury vacationers: The can also find happiness in Asia. The travel company’s recent analysis shows that the average cheapest five-star hotels in the world are in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A night in a luxury hotel costs an average of 95 euros.
