With the increasing spread of the so-called delta variant of the coronavirus, some popular holiday countries are currently rather poor than quite suitable for a trip. Find out which country to avoid here.

Vaccination rates are increasing and most travel restrictions in Europe have fallen. However, the spread of the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus is causing concern. The German Medical Association advises against traveling to vacation areas where the variant is rampant.

“Travel to regions that are particularly affected by the Delta variant should be avoided,” said President Klaus Reinhardt of the Funke media group on Tuesday. “I appeal to all travelers to carefully inform themselves about the infection process,” emphasized Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) in an interview with the “Handelsblatt“.

In which holiday countries the Delta variant dominates, which rules must be observed by tourists or where the virus is currently spreading rapidly, you can find out here at an overview from FOCUS Online:

Portugal: In this southern holiday country, the delta variant is very rampant

Alongside Great Britain, Portugal is probably the country most affected by the Delta variant in Europe. Around 80 percent of all coronavirus infections can be traced back to the mutant. The capital Lisbon was last sealed off over the weekend.

“It is not easy to take such measures, but we thought they were essential so that the current situation in Lisbon does not spread to the whole country,” said Presidential Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva.

Whether there will be another lockdown in the coming weeks should be decided at short notice. Despite everything, Portugal is classified as a “simple risk area”. Entry is possible with a digital entry registration and a negative corona test.

A 10-day domestic quarantine must be observed on the return journey. However, this can be canceled by a negative test, proof of recovery or proof of vaccination.

Great Britain: Vacation country with the highest delta percentage

In the UK, the delta variant is spreading rapidly and now accounts for more than 90 percent of new cases. Planned further easing of the corona measures in England have initially been postponed for four weeks until July 19. The vaccination rate is now high with more than 80 percent first time and around 60 percent fully vaccinated adults.

Many Corona measures have been lifted, so pubs, restaurants and shops are largely open. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own corona measures, but they only differ in details.

There are further hurdles for people entering the country: a ten-day quarantine is usually necessary. A negative test is compulsory before entry, and PCR tests must be carried out on the second and eighth day after entry. There are no exceptions for vaccinated people. The federal government has classified Great Britain as a virus variant area because of the delta variant, so that after entering Germany from the island there is a 14-day quarantine obligation.

Often headache, rarely loss of taste: Delta variant causes different symptoms

Before traveling to the football European Championship games in London, there is a general warning: “I think that’s populism and can only advise against traveling to the games,” said Frank Ulrich Montgomery, chairman of the World Medical Association.

France

The Delta variant now stands for “nine to ten percent” of new infections, said government spokesman Gabriel Attal on Wednesday after the weekly meeting of the Corona cabinet headed by President Emmanuel Macron. Last Friday, Macron had estimated its share in France at a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in Berlin at around six percent.

In the Landes department on the Atlantic coast, the variant first identified in India already accounts for 70 percent of new infections, according to the spokesman. The area between Bordeaux and the Spanish border is the only one in France where the number of new infections has risen above the European alarm level of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants, said Attal. The area is also popular with German holidaymakers because of its beaches and campsites.

According to the RKI, France is a “simple risk area”. However, exceptions are, for example, Corsica or continental France.

For travelers from Germany and other countries, an up-to-date quick test is sufficient to enter the country. People can also enter the country with proof of vaccination. Those who travel back to Germany from France by land do not have to observe any entry restrictions. When traveling by air, a negative corona test, vaccination or recovery certificate must be presented.

Spain, Italy, Greece – There is little in the way of vacation here

In popular holiday destinations like Spain, Italy or Greece the incidence values are relatively low. Infections with the delta variant were reported sporadically. Traveling to these countries involves little risk.

“We must especially keep the emergence and spread of new and dangerous variants under control, which could slow down plans to reopen and curb consumption and investment,” warned the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Almost all of Italy currently belongs to the White Zone with the loosest Corona rules. In public interiors such as shops, museums, railways and trains, a mask is usually required. The country counted 835 new infections within one day on Tuesday.
