vaccination extended to all people with obesity over the age of 18 from May 1

Vaccination will be extended “From 1er may “ to all people over 18 “Who are seriously overweight”, i.e. a body mass index greater than 30, announced Emmanuel Macron in an interview with the regional press made public Thursday, April 29. Obese people over 55 were already given priority for vaccination.

“I invite the 2.3 million French people concerned [soit 15 % des adultes en France] to go to the vaccination centers this weekend ”, continues the Head of State excluding, for the moment, to open vaccination to all. “We will continue to prioritize by age because it is the most effective”, continues the head of state.

People with obesity are more likely to have a severe form of Covid. According to the first data from a national registry, dating from April 2020, 83% of patients in intensive care were overweight. “ Vaccination of the most vulnerable lowers the pressure on hospital services. But we have doses in stock ”, assures Emmanuel Macron.

So far, 14.9 million people have received at least one injection, and more than six million have received their two doses (or 11.5% of the adult population). The next step will take place in mid-May with the opening of vaccination to all people over the age of 50.
