Vaccination would have “symbolic effect”: Lauterbach is critical of the “Kimmich case”

Vaccination would have “symbolic effect”
Lauterbach is critical of the “Kimmich case”

At the weekend, the Bundesliga is dominated by one topic in particular: Joshua Kimmich and his vaccination skepticism. Now SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach criticizes the waiting of the professionals from Bayern Munich. But if this person changed his mind now, his vaccination could have a great effect on other people who are unwilling to vaccinate.

The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach has been critical of the vaccination status of Bayern professional Joshua Kimmich. “It’s not a good thing that he’s not vaccinated. If he says he’s waiting, it’s difficult,” Lauterbach said in the morning at Sport1. He really appreciates the 26-year-old as a “really great player”. This is “one of those who are committed against Corona, he donates to poorer countries,” said Lauterbach.

In March 2020, Kimmich and his Bayern colleague Leon Goretzka launched the “We Kick Corona” (#wekickcorona) campaign, with which they collect donations for social institutions. For those affected by the corona virus, the campaign has so far raised over 3.7 million euros in donations. Goretzka and Kimmich started with one million euros each. 90 aid projects have already benefited from the emergency aid, including vaccination campaigns.

“It would be best if the vaccination came and that you don’t build up a lot of pressure now,” said Lauterbach. “It is Joshua Kimmich’s own decision. We mustn’t put any pressure on, but it would be very valuable – it has an enormous symbolic effect.”

After the 4-0 win in the Bundesliga against 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday, Kimmich admitted on Sky that he had not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19. He had “a few personal concerns, especially when it comes to the lack of long-term studies,” said Kimmich. He does not categorically say that he “will not be vaccinated at all”. It is “also very possible that I will be vaccinated in the future,” emphasized Kimmich.

Kimmich’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann has been infected with the corona virus since the middle of the week. In February Bavaria was plagued by numerous corona cases. With Leon Goretzka, Javi Martínez, Thomas Müller and Benjamin Pavard, four of the record champions’ players were infected within a very short time. Bayern Munich last complained about a corona case in July 2021. World champion Corentin Tolisso tested positive and went into domestic isolation in his native France.
