Val-d’Oise: 12 people poisoned by carbon monoxide after a barbecue in a veranda

An idea that could have been expensive. On the evening of this Saturday, December 18, ten adults and two children were taken care of by the firefighters after being poisoned by carbon monoxide during a barbecue organized in a veranda in Chaumontel (Val-d’Oise).

Alerted shortly after 9 p.m., the firefighters took charge of the intoxicated guests, including two children aged 4 and 9, during this barbecue which was held inside the house without any ventilation. For this operation, they were forced to mobilize 21 firefighters and 7 machines according to La Gazette du Val d’Oise.

After a quick on-site examination, the twelve guests concerned were transported under oxygenation and in relative urgency to the hospitals of Gonesse and Beaumont-sur-Oise.

More than 100 deaths each year in France

According to figures provided by the government this year, this gas is the main cause of poisoning in developed countries. It is responsible for around 1,300 episodes of intoxication for nearly 3,000 intoxicated people and a hundred deaths each year in France.

Difficult to detect due to its colorless, odorless and non-irritating nature, carbon monoxide is usually released from a faulty appliance that burns wood, gas or charcoal.

If this gas is detected in an enclosed area, it is recommended to ventilate the room by opening all windows and doors and then evacuate the area before calling for help.
