Valéry Giscard d'Estaing is dead: the former French President died of the consequences of Covid-19. He was 94 years old.

Former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing has died at the age of 94. He died "on Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020 in his house in Loir-et-Cher", it says in a statement by the "Foundation Valéry Giscard d'Estaing" on Twitter. The health of the former politician has deteriorated, he died as a result of Covid-19. According to his wishes, the funeral will take place in the closest family circle.

According to media reports, Giscard, who was France's president from 1974 to 1981, was previously treated in a hospital in Tours. He made one of his last public appearances on September 30, 2019 at the funeral of another former president: Jacques Chirac.
