The prices for vanilla ice cream vary greatly – but are the differences between cheap ice cream and luxury products really so great that you notice the difference? The big comparison of the Stiftung Warentest from 2020 comes to a surprising result.
“Ice Cream” or just “Ice Cream”?
The difference in price is noticeable if the container says “ice cream” or “ice cream”. “Ice Cream” is a pure dairy product; “Ice cream” also contains vegetable fats, which often cause higher cholesterol levels. Other supposed quality features do not automatically indicate that the ice cream is of higher quality. Vanilla ice cream with a strong yellow tinge is not a sign that it contains more vanilla – the color is often simply created with colorants that are added to the ice cream mixture during production. The black dots, which seem to be due to vanilla pods in the ingredients, can also be a hoax: Some manufacturers give their ice cream the “point bonus”, even if they only work with flavorings.
Is Expensive Really Better?
But is a higher price really an indication of higher quality? To find out, Stiftung Warentest thoroughly tested a total of 19 types of vanilla ice cream – including products that were lactose-free or even vegan. In fact, this test clearly shows that it is worth investing more money for vanilla ice cream connoisseurs. The test winner is also pretty much the most expensive ice cream on the market. But surprisingly, in third place is extremely cheap discount ice cream that offers ice cream fans excellent quality. In the video you can see an overview of the results!
