Authorities were contacted on Tuesday morning after a shooting occurred on the grounds of a primary school in Vantaa, north of Helsinki, Finnish police said. Accordingly, the injured children are all twelve years old.
The emergency services arrested a twelve-year-old student in front of the school. The alleged perpetrator had a firearm with him. According to the police, the arrest went smoothly.
The police were initially unable to provide any information about the health status of the injured children. At lunchtime the police announced that a twelve-year-old child had died.
The public was asked to stay away from the area. The incident is being further investigated on site. During the large-scale operation, the emergency services cordoned off the school.
The school is a primary school in the Viertola district and has around 800 students spread across two locations. Vantaa is located next to Helsinki in the south of Finland and is the fourth largest city in the country with more than 200,000 inhabitants.
