Varicose veins, dents, bacon? Why we should still wear bikini

Of course there were them on every beach: the beauties. Tanned and flawless, they had draped themselves on the couches with the best possible sun exposure angle, their flowing hair tied in a loose bun, the toes perfectly varnished. And then there were the others. Lots. Many many. In the first days of our trip in Florida I noticed them. All those who looked like me, or a little bit dent, a little thicker, a little different than Heidi Klum and her "girls". That was unusual for my eyes, because in Germany it is obviously a question of figure whether you can “wear” a bikini or not. But at some point I looked out. The news value was exhausted. They weren't perfect, but they were still half-naked. So what?

Wear bikini despite bacon rolls

I slowly but surely relaxed, became more confident with myself and put on clothes that I wear here in Germany at least only with difficulty and really only on the hottest days. I stopped tugging on my shorts to hide the bottom dent on my thighs. I ran into the sea with my children, even though I was definitely wobbling and when I sat down, I honestly didn't care if a roll came over my bikini bottoms. Unthinkable for an average Otto normal citizen from here. You have to be one of the brave ones in Germany to stand over it. Here you conceal what makes everyone think that there are only people with perfect bellies. Well, keep them in your swimsuit. The others.

If only we all stood by ourselves

After the vacation I talked to a friend from Brazil and he laughed at my amazement at the American lightness of being – even with a heavy body. "Nah," he said, "it's not the Americans that special. You are German women who are special! ”And he told me about his homeland, where women with the most varied figures were walking around in the tightest swimwear. In general, hardly any woman in Brazil would come up with the crazy idea of not feeling sexy because of a few kilos too much. "Unsexy only makes women if they are ashamed of themselves," he said, and showed me a video of a Brazilian dance group in which sex appeal was obviously not a question of weight.

Body positivity – you all have to participate

I really have set out to keep that spirit. Honestly? I find it really hard, but I'm pulling it through! Even if I'm the one with the dents in hot pants. But it would be really good if I wasn't alone with it. If we would fucking show that we all look different and that not the imperfections are the exception, but the Heidi Klums. They are beautiful to look at and I am very happy to see their beauty. But I would be a little bit more happy to see a size XL bikini again. Or two. Or three. Or a thousand. And not just anywhere, but in the outdoor pool around the corner. That would be great! And bacon rolls also look a lot nicer when they get a little sunlight.
