Venezuela: famous YouTuber arrested, accused of links to terrorist activities

Oscar Alejandro Pérez Martinez, known on social media as Oscar Alejandro, was arrested at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas as he was preparing to travel to Canaima. He is accused of links to “terrorist activities”, his relatives said.

The famous Venezuelan YouTuber Oscar Alejandro, specializing in tourism, was arrested on Sunday in Venezuela, accused of links with “terrorist activities”, said his relatives, the authorities having not yet commented on the case. “According to the first information available, the arrest is linked to accusations of terrorist activities,” the family said in a statement sent to the press.

Arrested at Caracas airport

Oscar Alejandro Pérez Martinez, known on social networks as Oscar Alejandro, was arrested at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas, as he was about to go to Canaima, the national park where Salto Angel, the highest waterfall in the world. The videographer, who lives in the United States and has 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube and 580,000 followers on Instagram, is detained at the anti-terrorism division of the scientific police (Cicpc) in Caracas.

He will be presented to court on Monday, according to his relatives who hope that the situation will be clarified and that he will benefit from “fair treatment”. In his videos, Oscar Alejandro, who has visited 28 countries – the last one, Nicaragua -, goes to tourist sites and talks about local life. Since the start of the year, Venezuelan authorities have exposed at least six alleged plots linked to terrorism and anti-government conspiracies. This resulted in more than forty arrests.
