The generous selection of the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival has just been unveiled, with the competition, the films out of competition, as well as the Orrizonti and Orrizonti Extra sections.

The jury for the 2022 competition will be chaired by actress Julianne Moore. She will be surrounded by French director Audrey Diwan (Golden Lion in 2021 with L’Evénement), Argentinian director, screenwriter and producer Mariano Cohn, Iranian actress Leila Hatami, Italian director and screenwriter Leonardo Di Costanzo, director , Spanish screenwriter and producer Rodrigo Sorogoyen (currently playing with As Bestas, with Denis Ménochet and Marina Foïs), and the Anglo-Japanese writer, screenwriter and Nobel Prize winner in literature Kazuo Ishiguro.

Actor Brendan Fraser will make his big comeback with American director Darren Aronofsky in The Whale. We will also see Cate Blanchett, faithful of this festival, in the costume of an orchestra conductor alongside Noémie Merlant and Nina Hoss, in Tar by Todd Field. There will be White Noise by Noah Baumbach in competition and opening (and then a release on Netflix), with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig.

On the French side, double presence of Roschdy Zem, both as director and actor. He will present Les Miens, his new production, and will accompany the French filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski (Grand Central, Une fille facile), for the first time in competition at Venice, with Les Enfants des autres, whose main female role is played by Virginie Efira. Still on the director’s side, let’s mention Alice Diop, who, after the acclaimed documentary We, will present her first feature film, Saint Omer. Athena, the new Romain Gavras, produced by Ladj Ly, and broadcast on Netflix, is also selected in competition.

In the parallel sections, Sébastien Marnier (Irréprochable, L’heure de la sortie) will unveil L’Origine du mal with Laure Calamy and a prestigious female cast for a genre film expected in cinemas on October 5th. There will also be Pour la France, with Karim Leklou and Shaim Boumedine, Rachid Hami’s new production, after La Mélodie, with Kad Merad. Isabelle Huppert will be there with La Syndicalist by Jean-Paul Salomé, the French director’s first selection in Venice.
