Venice 2023: Golden Lion for Poor Creatures with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo

The 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival, which was held from August 30 to September 9, 2023, has delivered its verdict! Discover the complete results of the Competition.

This year 2023 marked the 80th anniversary of the Venice Film Festival, a prestigious Italian film festival. Under the direction of director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Babylon), president of the jury of the Official Competition, the 2023 edition has delivered its verdict.

The Golden Lion, the highest distinction of the Mostra, was awarded to Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos. It will be released in France on January 17, 2024. The film follows All the Beauty and the Spilled Blood by Laura Poitras, awarded last year. The American filmmaker was also part of the jury this year.

The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to the feature film Evil Does Not Exist, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Saint Omer, directed by Alice Diop, received this coveted prize in 2022. On the acting side, Cailee Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in Priscilla. As for Peter Sarsgaard, he was rewarded for his performance in Memory.

The Silver Lion for best director was awarded to Matteo Garrone for Moi, captain. The artist succeeds Luca Guadagnino, winner last year for Bones and All with Timothée Chalamet.

Note that the 80th edition of the festival was marked by controversy after the selection of feature films by Roman Polanski, Luc Besson and Woody Allen, involved in cases of sexual assault.

The Festival was also marked by the award of a Golden Lion for their entire career to director Liliana Cavani and actor Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. The latter was moved to tears when he received his award. A very strong moment of this 80th Venice Film Festival.

France, which presented 3 films in Competition (DogMan by Luc Besson, La Bête by Bertrand Bonello and Hors-saison by Stéphane Brizé), leaves this 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival empty-handed.
