Venice Film Festival: US drama "Nomadland" wins Golden Lion

At the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Lion went to the film "Nomadland". Frances McDormand plays the leading role in the US drama.

The film "Nomadland" with Frances McDormand (63) in the leading role won the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice Film Festival. The drama is about an older woman who loses everything in an economic crisis and moves around in a van. Director Chloé Zhao (38) and McDormand attended the event by video message from the USA because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The British Vanessa Kirby (32) was named best actress for her performance in "Pieces of a Woman". In the drama by director Kornél Mundruczó (45) she plays a woman from Boston whose baby dies while giving birth at home. Pierfrancesco Favino (51) was named best leading actor for "Padrenostro", an Italian story about two children set after a terrorist attack in the 1970s.

18 films in competition

The Silver Lion for best director went to the Japanese Kiyoshi Kurosawa (65) for "Wife of a Spy". The Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco (41) received the jury's grand prize for his film "Nuevo orden". A total of 18 films were in the competition, and the jury included Cate Blanchett, Matt Dillon, Veronika Franz, Joanna Hogg, Nicola Lagioia, Christian Petzold and Ludivine Sagnier.
