Giorgos Lanthimos “Poor Things” won the Golden Lion in Venice – the director especially praised leading actress Emma Stone.

Greek director Giorgos Lanthimos (50) is at the Venice Film Festival for his film “Poor Things”, starring Emma Stone (34), was honored with the Golden Lion.

In the dark comedy, the late Bella (Stone) is implanted with a child’s brain by a scientist (William Dafoe, 68) and brought back to life. During his acceptance speech on stage, Lanthimos praised his leading actress – who was not present due to the Hollywood strike – in the highest tones: “She is the film, in front of and behind the camera.”

Further prizes for dramas about refugees

The Italian Matteo Garrone (54) received the silver lion for best director for “lo capitano” about two refugees from Senegal. The jury’s grand prize went to Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (44) for his film “Evil Does Not Exist”.

The American Cailee Spaeny (25), who played the wife of Elvis Presley (1935-1977) in Sofia Coppola’s (52) “Priscilla”, was awarded best actress. The jury’s special prize went to ” Zielona Granica “, a film by Polish director Agnieszka Holland (74) about migrants on the Polish-Belarusian border.
