Like many boys his age, the 17-year-old wanted to take a vacation without his parents Verona Pooth (52) and Franjo Pooth (51). They allowed their son the trip to Dubai, but the presenter made one condition: Diego and his friend would have to pay for the trip themselves, they would only take over the flight – a cheap flight.

Verona Pooth: “Take care of that!”

Diego had to organize his trip himself and also pay the down payments to the hotels. “So I said: ‘I don’t care. You have had a few jobs lately, you have earned well, that takes care of'”, says the strict mom in the joint podcast “Poothcast”. The two friends should soon learn painfully that there are all sorts of things to consider when organizing such a trip. Because what awaited them in Dubai, Diego and buddy Philipp did not expect.

“The whole hotel consisted of escorts”

“We get out of the taxi. With our rucksack, totally exhausted. Philipp is slapped straight on the A ***,” remembers Diego. “I like: ‘For God’s sake, get in quickly!'” But the two of them couldn’t find safety in their accommodation. “The whole hotel that you were in with Philipp was made up of escorts,” Verona Pooth can laugh about today. A shock for the two boys: “We didn’t know that. We booked something online.”

The 52-year-old, who was staying in the desert city at the same time, visited her son and his boyfriend in her hotel to have dinner with them and couldn’t believe her eyes: “They were all beautiful, but escort times a thousand. And in the middle of it all my little son with his best friend Philipp. ” The hotel is known for two things, explains the 17-year-old: “The most beautiful cars in all of Dubai and prostitutes.” No big surprise for Mama Verona. Dubai is very beautiful, but it also has a high proportion of escorts. “And there are hotels where you don’t notice anything about it, it’s just not that common,” she says.

Diego Pooth: “I was totally overwhelmed”

But the adventure in the metropolis on the Persian Gulf was far from over for the two friends. “Philipp and I, typically the two of us, totally scheduled, thought the hotel was paid for,” recalls Diego. This was not the case, however, as they found out when they arrived when they were asked to pay for both their rooms and a security. The boys didn’t have enough money with them for that. “I was totally overwhelmed,” he admits. With his debit card, he was only able to take over two nights because of a limit.

No rescue from Mama Verona

In his predicament, however, he could not count on the rescue of Mama Verona. “I had already said to Philipp before that we can try, but I know for sure that my mother won’t give me a cent,” he says. And actually: the moderator was tough: “Then you look at me with dachshund eyes, tell me your whole story and that the hotel is not paid for and then I said: ‘Yes, my little mouse, then you have to sleep in the lobby.’ “Even the escort ladies in the hotel didn’t let them worry. “It can’t do you that much harm, they are pretty girls,” she replied to her son only when he tried to arouse her pity. “And if you’re homeless in the end, I don’t care. You have to sort it out yourself. It’s your money, your vacation. What do I have to do with it?”

When the hotel employees also suspected the boys of clearing the minibar and running away, in their desperation they had only one option: to call Papa Franjo. He saved the situation and reminded his offspring of another credit card with a higher limit that he should have with him. “The problem was that you didn’t care. You just took your strange debit cards and flew off and thought, somehow it will be sorted out,” Verona insists once more. Diego knows the reason for the different ways his parents deal with situations like this: “My mother, because she naturally grew up somewhere else, is different from my father and is very, very difficult to get excited about.”
