With its new Mavaro Neo SL electric bike, Cannondale seeks to provide a solution for urban journeys and off-road trails, all at a price that it is trying to control, but which nevertheless remains a bit high.
Electric VTCs are today the most popular cycle category among the general public, alongside urban models. Their skills give them a very interesting versatility, which allows them to be at ease in the city during the week, as well as on paths or other beaten paths during the weekend, for a stroll.
The new Cannondale Mavaro Neo SL — via Instagram and the official website — sits somewhere between these two worlds. This electric bike is equipped with some interesting equipment for your country outings, while being a viable solution for your trips in urban areas. The American manufacturer has released it in two versions, with three frame models.
An entry-level transmission
The Mavaro Neo SL 1 and SL 2 share the same technical sheet, with one difference: their transmission. The first relies on an 8-speed microSHIFT Acolyte transmission, compared to a 7-speed microSHIFT RD-M26L for the second. In all cases, these are entry-level systems, which can be somewhat disappointing given the price of the bikes.
The pair is sold for 2499 and 2299 euros respectively, a price higher than the average price of an e-bike in France. In this segment, we have the right to expect more high-end and sophisticated components, particularly in terms of the transmission, the engine and even the battery.
The engine, in fact, is a Bafang G020 with a torque of 45 Nm. This is the bare minimum that we ask for in the city, especially if you cross several hills. Fortunately, a Turbo function is available if necessary for positive elevations in particular.
This engine is associated with a modest 360 Wh battery – which is not removable, too bad – which claims a range of 108 km on a single charge. Please note, this range of action was more than likely obtained with the weakest assistance mode. It is therefore appropriate to temper this relatively attractive theoretical autonomy.
A nice range of equipment
For comfort, Cannondale relies on an SR Suntour NEX suspension fork with 50 mm travel, combined with 28-inch Schwalbe Big Ben tires. Ergo handles and a “Royal Lookin saddle» are also included, as are mudguards, a kickstand and a rear luggage rack capable of supporting 18 kg. A nice range of standard equipment, in short.
To slow down, you can count on Tektro HD-275 hydraulic disc brakes, with a 160 mm disc.
Frame geometries suitable for everyone
Each model is available in three sizes — M, L XL — as well as three frame geometries:
- Mavaro Neo SL: high frame
- Mavaro Neo SL Low StepThru: low frame easier to step over
- Mavaro Neo SL StepThru: middle frame
The Mavaro Neo SL 1 is available in a single color: Graphite. The Mavaro Neo SL 2 is satisfied with a Mantis color (green).
