Delays and postponements have always been an integral part of video game history. Simply, with the advent of the Internet and the rise of social networks, information is more difficult to remain secret. What is a First-Party?
First, let’s go back to the basics. What is a First-Party game? It is actually a term used in the video game industry, to refer to a title developed and published by the same publisher or the same company that manufactures the console. In other words, a first-party game is created by a company that owns the platform the game is intended to be played on. Delays to expect on PS5
For the year 2023, Sony has some big games planned for PlayStation 5 like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. But, according to a recent financial report, it looks like there were a few more that were planned for the same year (or early 2024), but which have been delayed. Thus, as noted by journalist Ethan Gach of the very serious media Kotaku, Sony’s latest financial report includes a section devoted to forecasts for the remainder of the fiscal year (which ends on March 31, 2024). If we especially notice the increase in sales of DLC and third-party games, the last point also lists “the impact of changes in the launch dates of some of the titles First Party.” We made you a screenshot of the passage, to spare you a laborious reading:
Unfortunately, as often in this type of document which is intended to be made public, the report does not go into the details, which means that we have no game names in our possession. We only know that the little sentence that interests us is written in the plural, and that it therefore concerns several Sony projects on PlayStation 5. On our side, we assume that it is surely Stellar Blade, an exclusivity of the Japanese publisher which has not given any news since September 2022. The other possibility is also the TPS Helldivers 2 which does not yet have a release date.
Fret not for Spidey fans, it seems highly unlikely at this time that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be affected by the bad news. The game must indeed be released on October 20, 2023, and all the stars are aligned. Sony is betting heavily on this game to end the calendar year in style.
