Very (beautifully) strong – BMW iX M60: The highest Munich e-scaling level

BMW turns its luxury ship iX into an athlete with the seal of M GmbH. M60 is the name of the silent bolide for rapid crawl speed. Its drive delivers 455 kW / 619 PS and up to 1100 Nm, the optics are just as polarizing as the civil versions, but much more aggressive.

Full power is only available with activated Launch Control (otherwise 1015 Nm), so the Munich-based company wants to encourage its customers’ play instinct. It fits in with the fact that they presented the car at the CES consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas. With Launch Control, the sprint value of 3.8 seconds that BMW is provisionally specifying should also be achievable. There is also a restriction on the engine output: 455 kW are only delivered at full throttle and for a maximum of ten seconds, otherwise it is only 397 kW / 540 PS. In the moment when the performance drops, you will definitely be quite fast. If you take a short break from the gas, it goes straight back to full steam. The propulsion is only really limited at 250 km / h, i.e. 50 km / h later than with the already known iX versions.Motors: Particularly powerful, particularly sustainableThe power is generated from two electric motors to the four standard 21-inch or the optional ones 22 inch wheels sent. The front one has an output of up to 190 kW, the rear 360 kW. The latter will do the main work in normal operation. Both are current-excited synchronous machines, so they do without permanent magnets and thus the use of controversial rare earths. The rear motor has a special technical feature: It is operated in six phases and has a double inverter. This should enable a particularly high power density and thus an increased peak performance. BMW specifies an efficiency of 93 percent for the drive unit, which is also very high for electric motors. According to the WLTP, power consumption is specified at 24.7 to 21.7 kWh / 100 km. The car’s drag coefficient in sport mode is 0.26, and the 105.2 kWh net capacity in the 600 kg battery is enough for 499 to 566 kilometers. Charging is carried out at fast charging stations with up to 200 kW, and charging from 10 to 80 percent should be possible in 35 minutes. With alternating current you have to be content with a meager 11 kW charging power. Of course, BMW emphasizes the “M-specific tuning” of the two-axle air suspension with automatic level control, promises dynamism, agility and precision as well as particularly clear feedback for the driver. Despite the high carbon content, the “Sports Activity Vehicle”, which weighs more than 2.5 tons, is supposed to enable “outstanding cornering dynamics.” When it comes to electronics, BMW has everything the house has to offer; being. The concept with the huge curved display and the operating system BMW OS 8, which takes getting used to, corresponds to the other two versions and is standard. The “Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System”, laser light, comfort access, active seat ventilation for driver and front passenger and are also always on board the thermal comfort package, announced BMW. That can also be at a price of 131,800 euros. Climate protection is a top priorityBMW attaches particular importance to the holistic concept for sustainability in communication: controlled raw material extraction, production with 100 percent green electricity and a high proportion of natural and recycled materials are mentioned. Cobalt and lithium for the high-voltage batteries are procured by BMW from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and supplied to the manufacturers of the battery cells. In addition, 100 percent green electricity is used for vehicle production as well as for the manufacture of battery cells. A high proportion of secondary aluminum and recycled plastic also contribute to the resource-saving production of the BMW iX M60. FSC-certified wood, leather tanned with olive tree leaf extract and other natural materials are used in the interior. Recycled fishing nets, among other things, serve as the raw material for floor coverings and floor mats. The BMW iX M60 is due to be available from dealers in Austria from June 18, 2022.
