Very small decline in food prices between August and September, for an overall level that is still very high

It is not yet the long-awaited decline, but a very slight decline. Food prices in fact marked time in September, according to data published Thursday September 28 by panelist Circana. It estimates the drop in prices for consumer products on supermarket shelves at -0.6% over one month.

“This figure, while encouraging, remains insufficient to remove the constraint weighing on the French budget”, says Emily Mayer, director of Circana. However, when compared over a year, the rate of price increases seems to continue to slow down. It went from 13.6% in July to 12.4% in August, reaching 11% in September. However, this development must be put into perspective, by placing the cursor one year earlier. Inflation shows an increase of 21.2% compared to September 2021, very close to its August record of 21.3%.

Inflation is therefore lower, but prices are still increasing year-on-year. Over two years, they remain very markedly increasing, by + 21.2%. This data hardly changes as inflation was already high [en 2022] in the same era. The situation has therefore not yet changed for French consumers, who continue to restrict themselves on quantities and change their habits to save money, in particular by changing brands and purchasing private labels. The trend is illustrated in the monthly delivery of the typical shopping basket concocted by Circana for The world. Worth just over 100 euros at the end of 2021, this trolley, made up of products from national brands, private labels and first prices, now costs 125.64 euros. That is 37 cents less than in August, a minimal reduction in the bill. Here again, comparing over one year, the increase seems to moderate at 9%. But, since September 2021, when the first basket was put online, the increase remains very high, at 22.8%.

Among the products which showed an increase in price over the past month, we can cite, among others, the can of tuna (+ 3.7%), the spread (+ 1.8%), the packet of chips (+1.2%) or the jar of strawberry jam (+1%). Conversely, others saw their prices decline, such as hamburger steaks (– 3.9%), applesauce (– 3.2%), ham (– 3.7%), yogurts (–8%), shellfish (–1.9%) or basmati rice (-1.3%).
