“Very strong pain”, “hours in the toilet” … The first center against endometriosis opens in France

In Bordeaux, a structure devoted entirely to endometriosis has formalized its opening within the Tivoli-Ducos clinic. A unique initiative in France.

Pain, discomfort, infertility, personal and professional life turned upside down: endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects at least 1 in 10 women. Long forgotten, people suffering from endometriosis have very often had a chaotic medical journey before receiving treatment adequate. Since 2018, in Bordeaux, the Tivoli-Duclos clinic has been changing the situation and working on this pathology thanks to its “Endo” unit. And a first French center dedicated exclusively to endometriosis now welcomes patients, reports Le Figaro, Sunday 6 June 2021.

“IFEM Endo is a private healthcare structure exclusively dedicated to the medical and surgical management of endometriosis, clinical research and medical and paramedical training around this disease”, explains theMultidisciplinary Franco-European Institute for Endometriosis.

This center is a major step forward for many patients, like Sarah, a 26-year-old nurse. Asked by Le Figaro following his operation at the Tivoli-Ducos Clinic, it testifies to have always felt “very strong pains” during her period. When she is on days off, the young woman does not arrive “to do nothing”. And pass “hours in the toilet” because of nodules in the vagina and rectum.

“Each woman who enters our institute benefits from a roadmap that traces all of her care, but also her follow-up, long afterwards, in the very long term., declares doctor Benjamin Merlot on the website of South West. About twenty people will take care of each patient according to her own history of her pathology. Because not one endometriosis is quite like another “.

According to Professor Horace Roman, gynecological surgeon who exclusively practices deep endometriosis surgery in Bordeaux,“We neglect too much the symptoms that appear during menstruation. Urinary and digestive problems, pain in the right shoulder … All these signs should now encourage doctors, gynecologists or general practitioners to push further investigations.”
For the past three years, the “Endo” team has recorded 3,750 consultations and 750 surgeries per year, as well as 115 training courses for health professionals.
