- The SP Council of States Paul Rechsteiner resigns. This is reported by the St. Galler Tagblatt.
- He served in both chambers for 36 years.
- The long-standing union president is leaving the political arena in Bern at the end of December.
With Paul Rechsteiner, a heavyweight in Swiss politics is stepping down. “I think it’s allowed now,” he tells the St. Galler Tagblatt. Contrary to expectations, he will not leave the Council of States at the end of the legislature, but at the end of this year. This leads to a by-election. The FDP and the SVP – who, according to the St. Galler Tagblatt, would very much like to inherit Rechsteiner’s seat on the Council of States – must now hastily nominate a candidate.
According to the SRF regional journal Ostschweiz, the reason for his resignation in December is that Rechsteiner wants separate by-elections before the federal elections. That would give the people of St. Gallen the opportunity to decide in advance how the St. Gallen representation in the Stöckli should proceed.
Party colleagues, but also political opponents, show a lot of respect for the 70-year-old in Bundesbern. He is considered a politician who, together with his political competitors, can forge proposals that will win a majority.
