In March, the first aired the last episode of “Veterinarian Dr. Mertens”. Now there should be an eighth season.

More than five million viewers tuned in in March 2021 when the last episode of the series “Veterinarian Dr. Mertens” was broadcast on Erste. The seventh season should not be the last, as the broadcaster confirms when asked by the news agency spot on news.

Due to the success of the series, new episodes are to be shot. “The joint editorial team of the ARD main evening series has commissioned another season of ‘Veterinarian Dr. Mertens’ because the seventh season was so successful,” explains a spokeswoman. And further: “We will produce next year and broadcast in 2023.” However, they do not want to reveal any further details at the moment.

Can Elisabeth Lanz work with elephants again?

There is also no official information about the cast. Main actress Elisabeth Lanz (49, Dr. Susanne Mertens) is likely to be there again. In an interview with spot on news in February, she spoke about what she might miss in connection with the series in the future.

“Perhaps I will miss the intensive get-together with the animals and animal trainers,” she said at the time, among other things. She wanted to keep visiting the city of Leipzig, where the film was shot, because of her friends there. She particularly enjoyed working with the elephants: “I can’t even imagine that this will no longer be possible. Maybe I can stop by again anyway …” It should be 2022 at the latest, when the new shooting begins but presumably be the case.
