Another wrestler executed in Iran

In September, the execution of the Iranian wrestler Afkari caused international outrage. Now the mullah regime has another athlete executed. The man is said to have killed a youth in an argument years ago.

Five months after the execution of Navid Afkari, another wrestler was executed for a homicide in Iran. According to the news portal Aftabnews, the judiciary in the province of Khusestan in southwestern Iran confirmed that the 30-year-old Mehdi-Ali Hosseini had been hanged in the prison in the provincial town of Desful.

In 2015, Hosseini killed a youth in a dispute in the city of Andimeschk and was sentenced to death by a court as a result. After five years, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.

In Iran, according to Islamic law, the principle of "Ghissas" or blood revenge applies in such cases. Accordingly, in a murder case, the victim's family can decide whether or not the perpetrator will be executed. Several prominent wrestlers in the country had asked the family of the victim for a pardon from Hosseini in recent weeks. According to media reports, Hosseini was a regional wrestler and not a member of the Iranian national team.

The wrestler Afkari was executed in September last year. According to the Iranian judiciary, he had killed a security officer and confessed to the crime in 2018 during a protest demonstration in Shiraz in southern Iran. The athlete, his family and human rights organizations argued that the confession was obtained through torture. The execution was strongly condemned at home and abroad. The Iranian judiciary rejected the criticism and stressed that politically motivated pressure from abroad would not undermine current Islamic law.
