South Korea will have to say goodbye to gamers’ favorite video streaming platform, Twitch.

Twitch has in recent years become one of the largest web platforms used by the younger generation, particularly in the world of gaming. However, this preponderance will not have been enough to keep it alive in one of the king countries of e-sport, South Korea, which Twitch will leave in the coming months.

Twitch is too expensive

This is an announcement that surprised many. Twitch has just announced its departure from South Korea, which will be effective in a little over two months, on February 24, 2024. The reason? Excessive local operating costs depending on the company.

Twitch is operating in Korea at a loss, and there is unfortunately no solution for our business to operate more sustainably in this country » is thus indicated by the press release. In fact, if the information given is to be believed, the “ Network fees in Korea are still 10 times higher than in most other countries. » Result, we have to leave.

Only South Korea is affected

Before arriving at this decision, Twitch had tried several maneuvers to reduce these prohibitive operating costs, such as adjusting the maximum quality of its videos (with a maximum ceiling set at 720p). Without effect it seems. Aware of the importance of its activity in the country, the American firm explained that it was seeking to “ help Twitch streamers in Korea move their communities to other livestreaming services in Korea. »

The rest of the world wouldn’t have to worry, however. The Korean situation would indeed be very particular, and would not be found elsewhere. “ We would like to clarify to all of our global communities that this is a unique situation » thus certified Twitch. So the service would be safe in France?
